Internet Archive Outage Reported In Multiple Countries

Have you been trying to access something on the Internet Archive but failing? It’s not just you. There are numerous reports of the Internet Archive currently being down and inaccessible.

The Internet Archive is a repository of books, audio, movies and much more. It’s often the first place people will turn to when they’re looking for something online, and this outage is definitely being noticed by quite a few people.

Mark Graham, who runs the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, told me the servers are being overloaded by an unnamed artificial intelligence company that’s grabbing data from the Internet Archive.

“Sorry, but archive.org is down temporarily— working to restore service,” Graham messaged me on Sunday night.

The first social media reports that something weird was happening at the Internet Archive started popping up around 8:40 p.m. ET. The reports have become more frequent ever since.

The homepage for the Internet Archive will sometimes load, but more often users seem to be greeted by a “server error 502” message noting that the group’s servers are simply overloaded. Reports of the outage are being seen in the U.S., Australia and Mexico.
